“The day you catch an idea you fall in love with, even a small one, is a beautiful day.”
—widely attributed to David Lynch (original context unclear)
If you’ve subscribed to Write On for some time, you know it’s been a while since my last post. I plan to be more active on this platform in the coming year, as I’m teaching the memoir section of the Pioneer Valley Writers’ Workshop year-long manuscript program and will be regularly writing up lots of craft-related advice as part of that endeavor. At the same time, it recently occurred to me that it would be fun to resurrect an old blog of mine called The Premise. The Premise was a collection of quotes and inspirations about literature and the arts more generally. Simple stuff, but jazzy enough if you happen to be of a bookish persuasion. The title is based on one of my favorite quotes by Nabokov, from his metafictional crime novel Despair: “To begin with, let us take the following motto...Literature is Love. Now we can continue.”
I’ve missed my old blog, so I figure, why not make similar posts here, adding on to the craft advice I’ve always offered? Why not indeed! And since The Premise is a better title than Write On, I hearby re-christen this Substack accordingly. I’ll continue to offer craft-related advice as I always have, but will also be posting simple pairings, like the one above. I hope you enjoy.
